How to Get a Professional Aerial Photo of Your House or Lake Home in Minnesota
Satellite views and county maps are not the aerial photo you want on the wall. Here is what a professional drone portrait of your house, cabin, or lake home in Minnesota involves and how to commission one.

People search for an aerial photo of their house for good reasons: to hang on the wall, to send to family, to record the place before a renovation or a sale, or simply because they have never seen it from above. The satellite view and the county assessor’s photo are not that picture. This is a guide to what a real one involves and how to get one in Minnesota.
Why satellite images are not the photo you want
Satellite and mapping imagery is shot straight down, at midday, from a very long way up, and often years ago. Roofs become rectangles, trees become blobs, and the lake is a flat gray. It is fine for finding the driveway. It is not a portrait of a home.
A drone portrait is taken from a few hundred feet at an oblique angle, in warm low light, with the photographer choosing the moment. The house has faces and shadows. The dock, the boathouse, the fire pit, the shoreline, and the woods behind are all in the frame, and the image is sharp enough to print at poster size.
What a lake home portrait includes
Our Premium Estate Package is built for exactly this. One golden-hour session at the property. A private online gallery of finished, color-graded images: the classic oblique portrait, a water-side approach at dock height, a high overview of the lot and shoreline, and a handful of detail frames. A short cinematic film of the property set to music. And optional fine-art prints, sized and finished for the wall.
The emphasis is craft and permanence rather than volume. This is the photograph the family keeps, the one that shows up in the holiday card and the one that hangs in the entry. Many clients commission it before a generational transfer, after a build or renovation, or simply because the property has been in the family for decades and nobody ever documented it properly.
Timing it right
Golden hour, on a calm day, is non-negotiable for a lake home. The water goes glassy, the light warms the siding and the logs, and the tree lines throw shadows that give the image depth. In northern Minnesota the best windows are late May and June, when everything is fresh and green, and the last week of September, when the fall color arrives around Bemidji, Walker, and the Brainerd Lakes. Winter portraits, with the lake frozen and the lights on at dusk, are quietly some of our favorites.
We schedule a window rather than a fixed hour and watch the forecast. If the day is going to be windy or flat, we will tell you and reschedule rather than deliver a photograph you will not love.
Where we work
We photograph homes, cabins, and lake properties across northern Minnesota from our base in Bemidji: Lake Bemidji, Cass Lake, Leech Lake and Walker, the Park Rapids lakes, the Grand Rapids area, the Brainerd Lakes, the Duluth area, and Rainy Lake up at International Falls. Properties within about thirty miles of Bemidji are in our home zone; beyond that we add a flat travel fee, quoted up front.
A few properties sit in places with flight restrictions, such as inside a state park, on tribal land, or near an airport. We check every address in advance and will tell you if anything applies. In nearly every case there is a lawful way to make the photograph.
What this is, and what it is not
This is a commissioned portrait session, and it is scoped and priced as one. It is for owners who want a significant property documented properly and permanently. It is not a quick single-photo service, and it is not listing photography: if you are preparing a typical home for sale, a local listing photographer with a drone add-on is the right call, and we will happily say so. Most of our estate clients own established lake properties, family farms, or homes with land around them, and many run the businesses we photograph the rest of the year.

You do not need to be there for the shoot, though most owners choose to be; it is a pleasant evening on the dock watching your home get photographed the way it deserves.
